The specialists at Minneapolis Radiation Oncology are providing the latest radiation therapy, with pinpoint accuracy, to patients with multiple brain tumors. A new Varian™ TruBeam™ linear accelerator (LINAC) with HyperArc™ technology at the MRO Ridgeview cancer treatment center in Waconia brings this state-of-the-art treatment closer to home for patients in the SW Metro. The technology is designed to help treat patients with multiple brain metastases significantly faster and more efficiently.
“This is state-of-the-art radiation therapy. The pinpoint accuracy of HyperArc technology makes treatment times faster and more efficient,” says Dr. Stephanie Childs, Radiation Oncologist at Minneapolis Radiation Oncology at Ridgeview Regional Medical Center in Waconia. “Quicker treatment means a patient is less likely to move, helping to make treatment a better experience for the patient.”
HyperArc is an automated treatment delivery paradigm, which aims radiation at tumors from a variety of beam angles. HyperArc allows the clinical team at MRO to irradiate multiple brain tumors at the same time without the need to reposition the patient. “The automated delivery of radiation beams together with predefined safe locations of imaging to verify target accuracy makes HyperArc a very efficient treatment delivery for our patients” says Dr. Raj Varadhan, Director of Physics at Minneapolis Radiation Oncology.
Radiation is delivered with volumetric arc therapy (VMAT) providing pinpoint accuracy measured in submillimeters. The higher level of accuracy and precision that HyperArc provides to treat multiple brain metastases allows radiation therapists to deliver a high dose of radiation to the tumor while minimizing the dose to the surrounding healthy normal brain tissue. Once a patient is positioned for treatment, it takes approximately 2-8 minutes to deliver the radiation depending on the number of targets in the brain.
Over more than 40 years, Minneapolis Radiation Oncology has earned a reputation as a trusted specialist: a leader in treating cancer patients in the Greater Twin Cities, Brainerd Lakes Area, and Western Wisconsin. Through its 11 convenient locations, MRO is committed to bringing patients the advanced radiation therapy they need close to home.
